Chanterie Medieval Vocal Ensemble is dedicated to the performance of music of the middle ages, in an approach that places equal stress upon scholarship and performance instinct. Since 1997, the members of Chanterie have brought a combination of historical research and musical taste and experience to the performance of music from the 11th through 14th centuries. Depending primarily upon voices, but with the occasional support of harp, psaltery, recorder, and percussion, Chanterie brings this wonderful music to new life. The huge corpus of music of the ars antiqua is rich with potential: sacred and secular, monophonic and polyphonic, Latin and vernacular— there is much to explore. The members of Chanterie view their work with this repertoire as an ongoing learning process, a process which begins with the fundamentals of chant and the beauty and vigour of unadorned melody. Too often in the study of medieval music, the focus is upon examples that best fit within a linear perspective, taking on an importance that only the hindsight of our era can give, and hiding the great variety of styles to be found within the different genres. Chanterie seeks to present the music in a fashion that will emphasize its place not only within the history of musical development, but more importantly, as a component of the human experience. |
